Wiseman (Frederick) is born in Boston.

Frederick Wiseman grows up in Brookline, graduates from Williams College, Yale Law School, serves in the military, then studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. Returning to the U.S., Wiseman makes his first film, which is based on a novel about gang life in Harlem, in 1964. After teaching at Boston University Law School, he goes on to make more than 40 documentary films, including one on the on the Massachusetts mental health system in 1967* and one on Boston City Hall in 2020.* One of the most accomplished documentary filmmakers of his time, Wiseman dies in Cambridge on February 16, 2026.
